Snow leopard protection project to be implemented

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Ministry of Environment and Tourism and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) introduced the Future of the Land of Leopard joint project. Head of the Ministry’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources Management G.Nyamdavaa, head of the Public Administration Department P.Tsogtsaikhan and Conservation Director of the WWF Mongolia B.Chimeddorj introduced the policy on snow leopard protection, project objectives, activities and structure.

The officials of relevant divisions and scholars noted that the population of snow leopards in Mongolia has risen and reached 1200, and said that they’re pleased with the upcoming project.

The project will be implemented in Darviin Mountains, Mount Khasagt of Gobi-Altai aimgag, Turgen and Tsagaan Shuvuut Mountains of Uvs aimag, Mount Sair, Khatuugiin Mountains of Bayan-Ulgii aimag. The main purpose of the project is to protect the endangered species, its prey species and habitat. In this regard, the protection of snow leopards’ prey species and habitats will be improved with participation of locals and herders, as well as poaching and illegal wildlife trade will be reduced with the participation of law enforcement agencies.

The project will be implemented for five years and will also focus on improving herders’ livelihoods by providing proper pasture management, developing livestock husbandry meeting the carrying capacity of pasture and supporting livestock value chain.
