/MONTSAME/. V.
Enkhbold, Permanent Representative of Mongolia to the United Nations met with
António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on April 18 as
the Vice Chair of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC).
The meeting was attended by
permanent representatives of Armenia, Burundi, Botswana, Lesotho, and Paraguay,
members of the Bureau of the Group of LLDCs. During the meeting, the parties
exchanged views on preparations for the Third United Nations Conference on
LLDCs to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in 2024. The Group of LLDCs proposed to
appoint High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked
Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States Rabab Fatima as a
General Secretary of the Conference and Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres
accepted their proposal.
Lack of territorial access to
the sea, remoteness and isolation from world markets, and high transit costs
impose serious constraints on the overall socio-economic development of
landlocked developing countries. Thus, the members of the Bureau of the Group
of LLDCs highlighted the importance of adequate preparation as the Third United
Nations Conference on LLDCs is of high significance to those
countries.
