National Weightlifting Championship Underway

Ulaanbaatar, January 22, 2026 /MONTSAME/. The National Adult Weightlifting Championship, part of the Mongolian Sports Festival, began on January 21, 2026, at the Mongolian Wrestling Palace.


The two-day competition brings together more than 120 athletes from sports committees and clubs in Ulaanbaatar, as well as Orkhon, Darkhan-Uul, Khentii, and Arkhangai aimags. Competitors are contesting eight weight categories each for men and women. The event marks the 72nd men’s and 22nd women’s National Championships, with the lightest weight categories opening the competition.


The championships began with the women’s 48 kg division, where nine athletes competed. International Master Tungalag B. claimed the gold medal after lifting 52 kg in the snatch, 61 kg in the clean and jerk, and a total of 113 kg, securing her eighth national title across the youth, junior, and senior National Championships.


Having set 52 national records over her career, Tungalag said after receiving her award, “I am happy to have won the national title again. I had actually taken a short break from the sport, but when I heard the National Championship was taking place, I couldn’t stay away. My preparation wasn’t ideal, but I decided to compete anyway. It was great to compete with the younger athletes; they have improved a lot. I congratulate them all and encourage them to keep working hard.” In the same weight category, Buyannyam Kh. of Khentii aimag won the silver medal, while Khulan Kh. of Darkhan-Uul aimag took bronze.


Meanwhile, the Mongolian Weightlifting Federation has begun operating under a new organizational structure following its recent general meeting. Erdenejargal B. was elected President of the Federation in June 2025At a recent Governing Council meeting, following a members’ meeting, international referee Odgerel L. was appointed Secretary General, while Mart Ch. and Anujin G. were appointed as national team coaches.
