Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ With the establishment of an agreement with Bermuda-based Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) to co-brand 14x27 MHz capacity of its ABS-2A satellite as MONGOLSAT-1, Mongolia now has a satellite in orbit.

A launching ceremony was held today, April 19, and a certificate on the co-branding agreement was presented by ABS CEO Thomas Choi to Prime Minister J.Erdenebat who attended the event to give remarks.

“I would like to thank ABS and its Mongolian partner MONGOLSAT Networks company on this occasion”, he said. The Prime Minister stressed that Mongolia’s first co-branded satellite MONGOLSAT-1 is a huge advancement to Mongolia’s ICT industry.

The ABS-2A satellite entered commercial use in January, 2017. The MONGOLSAT-1 will be facilitated to obtain agriculture, environment, mining and emergency related data. The capacity of the satellite will be used to launch a nationwide digital satellite TV, telecommunications and broadband service.

Thomas Kyo Choi, founder and CEO of ABS, the fifth largest satellite operator in the world, also gave remarks at the launching ceremony. “We feel extremely thankful to be welcomed to Mongolia, a nation of rich history and proud people”, he said. “I am pleased to host this ceremony where we announce the allocation of 12x27 MHz of satellite capacity on a newly launched ABS-2A satellite to be co-branded as MONGOLSAT-1”.

MONGOLSAT-1 shall have sufficient capacity to provide multiple services that are designed and developed for the benefit of the Mongolian people and its informational infrastructure. The first service to be offered by MONGOLSAT-1 is a 100 channel satellite television service anywhere in Mongolia without any charge with the customers only having to buy a satellite antenna and a set-up box. “MONGOLSAT-1 will deliver a high speed satellite internet of 100mbps to a terminal which will cost less than half the price of a new iPhone”, explained the CEO. MONGOLSAT-1 will also deliver critical telecommunications services at substantially lower prices than any other foreign satellite operator for the benefit of Mongolian companies as well as its government departments.

“When I created ABS 11 years ago, it was with the aim of making satellites more affordable to as many people in the world as possible, and I believe we are achieving this with the launch of MONGOLSAT-1”, he noted.

Having been active in the satellite industry for 11 years, ABS company is a leading global satellite operator with a fleet of 7 satellites covering the Americas to the Pacific Island and all countries inbetween.
