Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The highest title holders of the professional sumo, Hakuho M.Davaajargal, Kakuryu M.Anand of Mongolia, and Japanese yokozuna Kisenosato will skip due to injuries the Aki basho, Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament that will start on September 10 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan palace, Tokyo.
It was revealed on September 7, and Harumafuji D.Byambadorj will compete in the tournament as the only yokozuna.
If all three yokozuna miss the tournament, it would mark the first time since the beginning of the Showa era (1926-89) that such a strange turn of events has occurred, the Yomiuri published.
Kakuryu Anand sustained a serious injury to his right leg at the Nagoya tournament, and said the healing process is slow. “I can’t really step well with that foot yet,” he said.
It has been 17 years since there have been four active yokozuna, but over the past four tournaments, at least one of them has failed to make it through the entire 15-day basho.
