Ulaanbaatar, October 22, 2024 /MONTSAME/. The 149th Assembly of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) was successfully held on October 13-17, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The IPU Assembly assembled over 630 parliamentarians from around 130 countries across the world, with Deputy Chairman of the State Great Khural (Parliament) of Mongolia Bulgantuya Khurelbaatar, Members of the Parliament of Mongolia (MP) Nominchimeg Odsuren and Khosbayar Ganbat, and Secretary-General of the Parliament of Mongolia Baasandorj Barsuren taking part. During the session of the IPU Governing Council on October 17, 2024, elections to select three members of the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians took place, with nine parliamentarians from 8 member-states nominated, and MP Nominchimeg Odsuren was elected as the Member of the Committee.

The Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians consists of ten members, three of whose term is ending in October 2024, and three newly elected members from Mongolia, Serbia, and Uganda. The new members will serve from 2024 to 2029. MP Nominchimeg Odsuren has become the first Mongolian parliamentarian to serve on that Committee.

The Members of the IPU Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians operate independently, and this Committee is the only international mechanism with the responsibility of protecting the rights, investigating and addressing attacks and violations against the parliamentarians, who serve as the voice of the people. Currently, the Committee is reviewing more than 760 issues on human rights violations of parliamentarians from 47 member-states, including the case of Mongolian former parliamentarian Zorig Sanjaasuren, according to the Media and Public Relations Department of the State Great Khural of Mongolia.
