Cultural festival invites tourists to former capital of Mongol Empire

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The administration of Uvurkhangai aimag is making efforts to realize its ambition to make Kharkhorin soum (Karakorum) once again a popular destination among international and national travelers.
Governor’s Offices of Kharkhorin soum and Uvurkhangai aimag plan to hold a festival named ‘Silk Road – Kharkhorin’ after Naadam, on July 17-21.
Once a diverse capital city of the Mongol Empire and an important stop along the Silk Road network, Kharkhorin is now a town of over 10 thousand residents. The soum center neighbors with Erdene Zuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist establishment in Mongolia.
The Karakorum remains and the Erdene Zuu Monastery are the highlight attractions among the many cultural heritages of Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO registered World Heritage site.
With the 5-day festival, the organizers aim to glorify nomadic culture through arts and local traditions and customs, and promote Kharkhorin, former capital of the Mongol Empire as a potential center of international tourism in Mongolia.
A series of events including an international academic conference on the role of Kharkhorin in the Silk Road development, ‘Descendants of Great Rulers’ cultural show, ‘Inimitable Art’ exhibition, ‘Kharkhorin Cuisine’ international food festival, ‘Nomadic Mongolia’ and ‘Tsam Order’ religious and cultural showcases, ‘Horsemen’ show, Kharkhorin market street and horse stunts by circus artists wait the visitors of the ‘Silk Road – Kharkhorin’ festival.
The event will be held in cooperation with the Department of Culture and Arts, government implementing agency.
