Flooding Response Ongoing in Zavkhan

Ulaanbaatar, June 19, 2024 /MONTSAME/. Heavy rain storm caused a flash flood in Uliastai soum, Zavkhan aimag of Mongolia, on June 17, 2024, affecting 449 people in 158 households. In response, Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia S. Amarsaikhan convened the emergency headquarters of the State Emergency Commission of Mongolia to assess the disaster situation and make decisions to address it.


Currently, 20 households have been relocated and 45 persons have been transferred to a shelter, and silt removal deposited during the flooding and disinfection works are ongoing, reported the National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia.



The Head of the State Emergency Commission ordered immediate aid to 40 families who lost their homes. This assistance includes essential supplies such as Mongol Gers (traditional Mongolian dwellings), food packages, disinfectants (120 tons), rain boots (50 pairs), and protective clothing. To further support recovery efforts, MNT 400 million has been allocated.


Major General G. Ariunbuyan, Chief of the National Emergency Management Agency of Mongolia, was tasked with urgently evacuating citizens, disinfecting them, and cooperating with the aimag's Emergency Commission to provide immediate support as needed.


The National Agency of Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring of Mongolia has warned of possible floods, lightning, hail, and heavy storms this summer. Rain is expected in western and central aimags and spread to most areas in the coming days.
