Yesunbulag, December 26, 2025 /MONTSAME/. Altai soum of Gobi-Altai aimag in western Mongolia was connected to a reliable imported power grid on December 25, 2025.

At the invitation of Sun Tao, Party Committee Secretary of Hami Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China, a Mongolian delegation led by B. Tsedevsuren, Chief Executive Officer of Altai-Uliastai Energy System LLC, and Chinbat Gombosuren, Governor of Gobi-Altai aimag, conducted a working visit to Hami Prefecture from December 23 to 25, 2025. During the visit, Altai-Uliastai Energy System LLC of Mongolia and Hami Energy Group Co., Ltd., a state-owned enterprise of China, agreed to expedite preparations to connect a 35-kilovolt (kV) cross-border electric transmission line and conclude an agreement on the sale and purchase of power.

The new connection provides reliable and continuous electricity to approximately 360 households and more than 40 businesses in Altai soum.

Earlier, the construction of a 70-kilometer, 35 kV overhead transmission line and substation from Altai soum to the Burgastai border checkpoint was completed with MNT 8.3 billion in state budget financing and commissioned in 2024.

Building on that project, Altai-Uliastai Energy System LLC has, using its own funds in 2025, constructed an additional approximately 1.5-kilometer, 35 kV overhead transmission extension to the border area. The company completed all technical preparations to connect with the power transmission lines of Hami Energy Group Co., Ltd.

Moreover, on June 9, 2025, the Energy Regulatory Commission of Mongolia issued Resolution No. 541, granting Altai-Uliastai Energy System LLC a special license to import electricity. Following this approval, relevant state bodies and energy sector companies completed the necessary organizational arrangements.

This cross-border power project marks a significant step in bringing continuous electricity to one of Mongolia’s last off-grid soums.
