Yak Festival anticipated in Umnugobi aimag

An annual Yak festival is expected on May 27 at the Gurvan saikhan Mountain in Umnugobi aimag. The event has been organized since 2012 by the Governor’s office of Umnugobi aimag, Administration Office of Gobi Gurvan saikhan National Park and Governor’s Offices of soums, which have yaks.
The festival aims to conserve a tradition of raising yaks in the Gobi region, to increase the population of yak through supporting herders who raise yaks, promoting them to the public and to improve yak’s value through developing tourism.
During the festival, a trade fair of dairy products from yak and other animals and wool and cashmere products and ‘Yak of Saikhan 2017’ meeting will be held. Moreover, entertaining competitions, such as yak race and contest of the best breed of yaks will be organized. Each soum will also host games and contests. A bonus of MNT 5000 will be given for each yak in the festival as a stimulus for active participation.
