The Association of Daily Newspapers organized a discussion on ‘Solution to the traffic congestion’ on March 17. The authorities of the capital city led by Governor of the capital city and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar D.Sumiyabazar and Capital City Road and Transport Projects Manager B.Odsuren attended the discussion.

At the beginning of the discussion, the current situation of congestion was introduced. Ulaanbaatar has a population of about 1.6 million and 414,000 households. The city's population is growing by an average of 80,000 annually. Currently, there are 659 thousand registered vehicles in Ulaanbaatar city. In other words, the capital city has a high risk of gridlock in the coming two years.

Mayor D.Sumiyabazar introduced the solutions to the congestion. ‘’Correcting the city planning mistakes of the past 30 years is nearly impossible. Instead, step-by-step research and planning are necessary. Law on Legal Status of Ulaanbaatar City has been successfully amended after 27 years. For the first time, the Parliament established an Ad Hoc Committee on Ulaanbaatar City Development Policy. The government and parliament are supporting the capital city. Reducing traffic congestion is not just about building roads, bridges, and parking lots, and limiting vehicles. It depends on many factors including school and kindergarten enrollment, planning, proper management, a new culture of public transportation, public transportation park renovations, the improvement of sidewalks and cycling infrastructure. Everything has to go together to solve traffic congestion” he says.

In 2022-2024, 41 km of new main streets, 43.2 km of secondary streets, re-engineering intersections in 30 locations, and 98 km of sidewalks and cycling infrastructure are planned to be constructed in the capital city.
