Ulaanbaatar, March 21, 2024. /MONTSAME/. The Urban Planning Administration of the New Kharkhorum City announced an International Competition for the New Kharkhorum City Concept to be held from March 18, 2024, to August 2, 2024.

Following the Decree of the President of Mongolia No. 230 of 2022 on Restoring the Ancient Capital of the Great Mongol Empire, Kharkhorum, the Urban Planning Administration of the New Kharkhorum City was established by the Government Resolution.

The New Kharkhorum City will be a modern, smart, and people-centered city that incorporates the features of Mongolia's national heritage and culture, as reflected in the general plan of the city.

Following the Government Resolution, a total of 189,363.19 hectares of area in the territories of Ugiinuur and Khashaat soums of Arkhangai aimag and Kharkhorin soum of Uvurkhangai aimag have been taken under the special needs of the state for establishing New Kharkhorum city, which is five times larger than the territory of Ulaanbaatar. Having a population of approximately 500 thousand people with the potential for increase, 283 thousand workplaces are expected to be created in the first phase.

Ulaanbaatar occupies only 0.3 percent of the country's territory yet is home to 50 percent of the total population, 66 percent of the GDP, 61 percent of healthcare facilities, and 96 percent of universities and colleges. The concentration of people, resources, and industries has led to various social, economic, and environmental challenges, including an increased disaster risk. Consequently, there is an urgent need to build a new city to address these issues and ensure sustainable development in the region.

The competition is open to domestic and foreign teams, with a minimum of nine professional members. The participants' works will be introduced to the public online or through an exhibition and a joint commission comprising national and foreign experts will select the top five teams.
