National oncology center needs equipment for liver transplant

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ “Eleg negt Mongolchuud” foundation is conducting a One Billion MNT fundraising campaign to localize the liver transplant surgery in Mongolia’s National Oncology Center. The foundation and the center representatives, along with professional artists, called a press conference on April 24 to announce the commencement of the campaign.

Each year, over 2,000 new cases of liver cancer are reported in Mongolia, hundreds are dying of liver cancer. Nearly 80 percent of liver cancer patients are diagnosed with Stage 3 or 4 cancer. Death caused by liver cancer makes up 44 percent of all cancer-related deaths.

For the course of little over the last year, more than 100 cancer patients got liver transplant in India, some 60 received the surgery in South Korea. To sum up, the liver cancer patients are spending 11-15 million USD in total to get liver transplant abroad, every year.

The National Oncology Center successfully operates liver resections over 350 times a year, and is professionally capable of conducting liver transplant surgeries, say the medical practitioners from the center.

One billion Togrog of funding will be dedicated to purchasing required medical equipment for liver transplant and to sending a team of 20-30 professionals to India and South Korea for short-term capacity building trainings.
