Ulaanbaatar, April 8, 2025 /MONTSAME/. The area with the highest risk of flooding in Ulaanbaatar is the 43rd khoroo of Bayanzurkh district. Therefore, the construction of a flood wall, which is the first phase of the "Selbe Revival" Project, has started in the Natur area in the 43rd khoroo.

According to a study conducted by a professional organization, 31.68km of flood walls need to be built along the Tuul, Uliastai, Selbe, and Belkh rivers to protect Ulaanbaatar from floods. Landscaping work will be conducted after the construction of flood embankments. The study for the "Selbe Revival" Project was launched in 2021, with the project itself being approved in 2023.

Head of the Urban Engineering Infrastructure Department of the Governor’s Office of the Capital City of Mongolia L. Altangerel said, “This is a comprehensive project that includes a total of 21.6 kilometers of paved roads, pedestrian paths, levees, green spaces, and landscaping along the Selbe River. The landscaping work will begin after the completion of the 1.4-kilometer flood wall around the “S’Outlets” clothing store, which is the area with the highest flood risk.”

CEO of the Prestige Engineering Company Sh. Ganzorig noted, "Since 2005, the Selbe River has been narrowing due to the construction of a large number of buildings close to the river. The project design work was developed taking into account this issue. If the section where the Selbe River meets the Dund Gol River is not protected, the apartments around Buyan Road will be regularly flooded. As the best solution to pass a large amount of water, we are building a high retaining wall. We plan to create favorable conditions for citizens to relax and listen to the sound of the river."

When a heavy flood hit Ulaanbaatar in July 2023, there was a 3.5-meter earthen dam along the banks of the Selbe River. The flood wall currently under construction is a reinforced concrete structure up to 4.5 meters high, depending on the features of the area. Construction work for this flood wall will be completed at the end of June 2025. After the construction work, landscaping for green spaces is planned.
