Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ More than 1000 monks from all around the nation take part in the annual Danshig Naadam – Khuree Tsam religious & cultural event.
The 3rd Danshig Naadam – Khuree Tsam religious & cultural event opened today at the central Stadium. Changing its venue from Khui Doloon Khudag to the stadium this year, the 2017 Danshig Naadam was opened by D.Choijamts, Khamba Lama of Gandantegchenling Monastery who underlined the role of the event in promoting peace and national integrity.
“Danshig Naadam is an important event that can preserve Mongolia’s unity and culture in this time of globalization”, he said.
On behalf of the capital city administration, co-organizer of the Danshig Naadam alongside Buddhist monasteries, Deputy Mayor J.Batbayasgalan delivered opening remarks, and said, “It’s been three years since Mongolia revived its Danshig Naadam tradition which had been lost for more than 100 years”. “Danshig Naadam contributes significantly to the development of tourism”.
In connection to the change of venue, this year’s Danshig Naadam doesn’t include horse race and archery. Following the opening ceremony which comprised several rituals such as the raising of the Soyombo banner, Mandala offering, performance of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar’s prayer and worshipping of Ochirvaani (Vajrapani), the wrestling tournament began between 256 wrestlers who compete for the title of Lion of Danshig.
The first Danshig Naadam was held in 1639 to celebrate the enthronement of 5-year-old Zanabazar, son of Gombodorj, as the first Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu and the spiritual leader of Mongolian people.
Although a Buddhist ceremonial event, it brought sense of unity to the people of Mongolia as it gathered the seven princes of Khalkha aimags together once a year. The word ‘danshig’ translates into ‘firm existence’. As such, the Danshig Naadam was not only a religious event but also a political function for it brought the Mongolian leaders together.
Mongolia revived its Danshig Naadam tradition in 2015 on the occasion of the 380th birth anniversary of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar. The Danshig Naadam tickets to the Stadium are free of cost, and in order to ensure order, free tickets are issued to Danshig-goers.
